Teach Portsmouth updates route finder to help future teachers

Discover the perfect teacher training course in Portsmouth

Teach Portsmouth's useful route finder tool has recently been updated to include teacher training courses for the academic year 2022 - 2023. Discover the best routes into teaching from training providers in Portsmouth that meet your needs.

With different training routes available, it is often challenging for people to understand what qualifications they need to start a career in education. There are also other factors to consider including where you want to be based during your training and what age group you would like to teach.

The Teach Portsmouth website offers a range of training and teaching resources to help you understand your options. The city has many providers who support trainees into early years, primary, secondary and post-16 settings.

The training page takes you through the 3 main routes, explaining 8 qualifications to consider as well as details on training providers.

Once this section has been reviewed, the route finder will take you step by step through the minimum requirements you need to teach by asking a series of questions. This includes whether you have a grade C or 4 in maths, English and science for primary education, and if you have a degree or equivalent qualification. You can also select how your training is funded as well as what age group and subjects you would like to teach.

Councillor Suzy Horton, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Families and Education at Portsmouth City Council, who was previously a head teacher said:

Councillor Suzy Horton tells us how important it is to have the right advice and support when researching your training options.

"Everyone's teaching journey is different but knowing where to start can often be the first hurdle. The route finder helps people navigate their options by presenting information in bitesize chunks.

"It's a fantastic tool and one that will benefit many people interested in teaching. There's so much information out there that it can seem a bit overwhelming. A local service like Teach Portsmouth can support those interested at the very start of their journey to find the information they need."

Those who complete the route finder will be presented with a list of course providers. This information includes where the training is held (either in a school, in a university or a combination of both), age group, subject and funding.

Once the information has been presented, the online tool allows an individual to click through to a training providers' website. Lynn Nichols, director of initial teacher training and school direct at Portsmouth and Solent Teaching School Alliance said:

"As a training provider in Portsmouth, we get questions from people asking where do I begin? We always recommend a visit to the Teach Portsmouth website to research your training options first.

"It's not unusual to feel unsure about what age group or subject you might want to teach at the beginning. As you research more, the puzzle pieces start to fall into place and a picture becomes clear. Speak to teachers and providers as they can also recommend the best routes based on your qualifications and experience level."
