5 ways to kick off your teaching career during lockdown

Begin researching your teaching career online
Coronavirus may be causing disruption to our daily lives but it doesn't mean that you have to put your dreams of being a teacher on hold. Here are five things you can do online now to learn more about becoming a qualified teacher.

 1) Research the routes into teaching

There are various routes you can take to become a qualified teacher in England. Familiarise yourself with what options are available to you and what route you could take.

Are you interested in a school-based training option? Or would university-based training better meet your needs? Or a combination of both?

Visit our Getting into Teaching page for more information on the options available.

2) Explore the courses available

To help you explore teacher training courses being offered in Portsmouth, we have created a handy route finder. It's simple to use: just answer a few questions, select your preferences and you'll be presented with a list of the initial teacher training courses available in the city.

Once your options appear you can click on the courses to find out more information on the training provider's website. 3) Hear from real teachers in Portsmouth

We think teaching is an incredibly rewarding career that allows you to make a difference and inspire young minds every day. But don't take our word for it - hear from Portsmouth teachers themselves. Watch them tell us what makes them proud to be a teacher in the city in the video below.

4) Attend a virtual information event

Get into Teaching are currently hosting a range of online events for now as face to face events aren't possible due to social distancing. These virtual events cover topics such as changing career to becoming a teacher. Their virtual events also cover how to prepare a teacher training application as well. You'll get useful information and have the opportunity to ask any questions you have to a panel of specialists.

5) Begin preparing your application

Now is a great time to familiarise yourself with the application process for initial teacher training. You could begin drafting your personal statement, drawing on any teaching work experience you have to support your application and demonstrate why you'd make a great teacher.

Use this time to identify two referees who you know well enough to highlight why you'd be suitable for a career in teaching.

Ready to submit your application?

Our initial teacher training providers in Portsmouth are still busy recruiting teacher trainees for courses starting in September 2020. So if you're ready to get started now, why not go ahead and submit an application?

If you're worried about how the coronavirus (COVID-19) might affect your application, you can find out more in our recent article: Coronavirus (COVID-19): Can I still apply for initial teacher training?
