What teaching bursaries are available for courses starting in 2021?

Every year, the Department for Education sets out the amount available for post graduate teacher training courses.

Our latest article provides an update on financial incentives available to support teacher training courses starting in September 2021.

In a previous article, we looked at teaching bursaries - what financial support is available. It outlined scholarships, bursaries and loans for people who were starting teacher training in 2020.

The Department for Education has now released details of the financial information for September 2021.

What financial support is available? 

The type and amount of financial support you could receive will depend on your circumstances and also the subject you are looking to teach.

There are three types of funding available that can help you train to teach:

  1. Tax free bursary or scholarship
  2. Tuition fee loan or maintenance loan
  3. Additional financial support if you're a parent, have an adult dependant or have a disability

Bursaries and scholarships  

Based on the Department for Education's bursary and scholarship guidance, we've put together information on what help might be available to post graduate trainees in England who are starting teacher training in 20211. Can I apply for a scholarship and bursary? 

Scholarships are awarded in place of a bursary.

The £26,000 scholarship in chemistry, computing, maths and physics is awarded to eligible applicants in place of a bursary.

You can find information on scholarship eligibility on the get into teaching website. Their dedicated scholarship page details the eligibility criteria that has been set by the relevant awarding professional body. 

What teaching bursaries are available for courses stating in 2021?  

The table above shows what tax-free bursaries are being offered by the Department for Education for eligible trainees with a 1st, 2:1, 2:2, Master's or PhD to help with teacher training costs in England.

Where can I find out about the availability of funding?  

The financial support you could receive will depend on your circumstances and also the subject you are looking to teach - it is important to read the small print whenever applying for financial help and double check the terms and conditions.
