A new initiative to recruit teaching assistants in schools has launched with the aim of filling urgent vacancies in primary and secondary settings, after an initial trial saw two new people join local schools.

Welcome to April's jobs of the month blog post, where we have rounded up the latest teaching, learning support, leadership and early years vacancies in Portsmouth. If you are looking for your next role in the city, we hope this is a useful place to begin your search.

If you are looking to work with children, volunteering provides invaluable experience for those wanting a career in the classroom. There are different ways to gain experience that include volunteering in a school, helping out at a local community group and paid internships.

If you are looking for a 'golden opportunity' to work in a school or college, a series of jobs, training and voluntary roles will be showcased at Portsmouth Guildhall as part of the Teach Portsmouth Jobs and Opportunities Fair in a bid to boost employment in the city.

Would you like to support children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) in the classroom? To learn more about this rewarding role, we asked Dawn MacWhirter, apprentice teaching assistant at Manor Infant and Nursery School to share a day in her life as a SEN teaching assistant.
