Come along to Portsmouth Central Library on Tuesday 7 November from 3pm - 5:30pm where you can learn about becoming a teacher in the city.
The information event is designed for those who are thinking about their options but not sure where to begin. It will provide details on routes into teaching and funding. You will have an opportunity to meet training providers who work with primary and secondary schools in the city.

Train to teach: + Primary + Secondary
Ark Teacher Training (ATT) is a school-based programme that offers a mixture of theory and classroom practice. The training provider has received their second 'outstanding' rating from Ofsted in all categories. They are currently looking for trainees to join three schools in the city in September in both primary and secondary education.

Essential Teaching UK is a leading provider of education qualifications. Their core ethos is to positively impact children and young people's lives by training educators to deliver outstanding learning experiences.
The training provider offers flexible accredited teacher training, coaching and mentoring qualifications, and assessing and verifying courses through their state of the art, live and virtual classrooms.

Fareham and Gosport Primary SCITT has recently been awarded outstanding in all areas in their 2023 Ofsted inspection. Their school-based training programme enables people to be in class from day one and be immersed in all aspects of teaching and school life.
They offer personalised support and guidance to every trainee from their highly-trained, expert class teacher mentors and dedicated SCITT team. Trainees work towards gaining their primary QTS with PGCE.

HISP teacher training offers a one-year postgraduate route to qualified teacher status (QTS) with the option to study for a masters' level postgraduate certificate of education (PGCE).

Portsmouth Primary SCITT offers a PGCE with QTS, qualifying successful primary trainees to teach children aged 5-11 years, and early years trainees to teach children aged 3-7 years.
This full-time course enables trainees to spend 60% of their time in local schools and 40% in our training centre participating in workshops. Trainees receive high quality mentoring whilst in school, together with holistic support from the SCITT team to enable them to develop into confident early career teachers.

Teach First is an education charity who train teachers in early years, primary and secondary schools. Those who enrol on the two year programme will be teaching in the classroom from day one and will grow quickly into professional practitioners. Their mission is to give children facing the biggest barriers the chance to fulfil their potential.

The Kemnal Academies Trust (TKAT) SCITT is an accredited ITT provider offering secondary (11-16) and primary (5-11) school-based initial teacher training awarding qualified teacher status (QTS) with the option to study for a PGCE with masters' credits.
TKAT SCITT prides communication and wellbeing support to trainees to enable them to successfully complete their training year. This supports trainees in finding a suitable early career teacher (ECT) post.

The Thinking Schools Academy Trust (TSAT) is a family of 26 schools across the South of England, including primary and secondary schools in Portsmouth. TSAT offers the the Department for Education internship programme for undergraduates and teacher training through Inspiring Future Teachers. TSAT will be alongside HISP at the event.

The University of Chichester has a long history as a centre of excellence for teacher education. In 2023, all their teacher education programmes were rated 'outstanding' by Ofsted, and the university was awarded the highest 'gold' rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework.
They offer a range of university-led training programmes and work in partnership with many schools in Portsmouth. Many of their students complete school placements and secure jobs at schools in and around Portsmouth. Whilst at university, students are taught an exciting, dynamic curriculum by experts in their fields, and whilst in schools, students are very well supported by university and school staff to fulfil their ambition to become an excellent primary school teacher.

The University of Portsmouth offers training for primary, secondary and further education teachers. Their courses have been rated good or outstanding by Ofsted.
Applicants will get hands-on experience, thanks to the university's partnerships with schools and colleges. Those who graduate will develop the skills and knowledge they need to open the door to excellent job opportunities.

Top questions
In most cases, you will require a C/4 at GCSE in maths and English. If you want to teach primary age, you will require a C/4 in science. Training providers can support you and give advice on how best to achieve these qualifications at the event.
Presentations will begin at 3:15pm - please arrive promptly at the event before this time. The presentations and question and answer session will last for around 25 minutes. After this time, attendees will be able to speak with exhibitors at the event.
Teach Portsmouth's love to teach campaign is an initiative to support people into teacher training. There will be further events throughout the year, enabling you to find your perfect teacher training provider before applications close later this year.
