Are you thinking about applying for initial teacher training, or your next teaching role? We're sharing four reasons why you should consider Portsmouth when choosing a great place to live, teach, or train to teach.

1) A vibrant waterfront city to explore

Portsmouth is the country's only island city with miles of beautiful waterfront to explore. Surrounded on all four sides with water, Portsmouth is a prime destination for sports of all kinds on the water.

And if water sports aren't your thing, you can still enjoy the beautiful beaches from the comfort of dry land!

2) A central location with excellent transport links

Portsmouth is centrally located on the south coast of England, situated in Hampshire. The city enjoys excellent road connections, along with regular train services to London and the south coast.

Portsmouth International Port hosts a range of cruise operators, along with more ferry routes than any other UK ferry port, serving popular destinations in France, Spain and the Channel Islands.

The beautiful Isle of Wight is also within easy reach thanks to regular ferry and hovercraft services.

If you're keen to get closer to nature, Portsmouth is a great base to explore the South Downs National Park and the New Forest National Park which are nearby.

3) A range of affordable housing options to pick

Portsmouth offers competitive prices across the range of housing options. Purchasing a home in Portsmouth is affordable, and is a further benefit for choosing to live near the sea and with all that Portsmouth has to offer.

In fact, housing in Portsmouth is 38% cheaper than in London (Expatistan, August 2020).

4) A wide range of things to see, do and experience

Portsmouth is a fantastic city offering plenty of experiences all year round. Whether you are in search of indoor or outdoor things to do, you can enjoy: waterfront shopping at Gunwharf Quays, magnificent museums such as the Mary Rose Museum, live music venues, contemporary art galleries, two cathedrals, a diverse literary heritage, nightlife, festivals such as Victorious, and countless events throughout the year.

The city is also home to Portsmouth Football Club, who play their home matches at Fratton Park.

We hope you've enjoyed learning a little more about the wonderful city that is Portsmouth. If you're keen to know even more, visit the 'living in Portsmouth' section of our website.
